GCE A Level
English Language and English Literature
English Language and English Literature
The GCE A Level course divides the study of English Language and English Literature into separate subjects and qualifications. Each subject adopts a very different approach to the study of English, and requires students to master different skills. English Language is more akin to linguistics, and students engage with topics including the development of language in children, the gendered use of language, independent research projects into how various aspects of language are used, and a creative writing element. English Literature focuses on the deep textual analysis of plays, poetry and prose, as well as implementing the correct terminology for the discussion of these ideas. Both topics feature coursework and examination components, and require students to express themselves eloquently and analytically in both spoken and written assessments. The majority of work for the A Level syllabus is based on the individual student’s ideas, which Brighten aims to guide and encourage.
