English as a first language for the IB Diploma combines elements of the study of Language and Literature. Students are divided into Standard and Higher levels, which affects the amount of material they must engage with over the course of their two year program. Learners taking this course must pass four key assessments over the two years; an IOP (Individual Oral Presentation), one or two World Literature essays depending on their level, an IOC (Individual Oral Commentary) and a final examination, which involves writing about unseen texts and discussing the work of various influential poets and novelists. A great deal of work students complete for the IB Diploma is based on their individual ideas and interpretations, so Brighten aims to provide guidance for students to best explore and articulate their own perspectives. The center also specializes on examination guidance, allowing learners to perform as well as possible in the final examination regardless of their previous coursework scores.
