One of the greatest consequences of the spread of the English language around the world is the accompanying spread English literary works. This has meant that authors, from Shakespeare to Steinbeck, and character, from Hamlet to Harry Potter, have gained worldwide recognition and have been absorbed into the popular cultures in countless countries.

Studying the English language gives students the chance to appreciate these texts in their original language. Not only does studying English open this huge range of literary masterpieces to students but there is also only a handful of text in the whole world not translated into English. Therefore no matter what the area of interest the student has, they can find a suitable text written in English. This can greatly advance a student’s knowledge in whatever area they choose to study.

Aside from the academic benefits that studying the English language, there are also huge advantages for those wishing to life outside their native country. They say that travel broadens the mind, exploring new landscapes, encountering new cultures and people, grants a person a greater understanding of the world we live in. Today international travel has never been so popular or so easy.

Unfortunately it is a simple fact that anyone with an interest or desire to journey extensively outside their own countries, a good grasp of English is essential. Without a doubt English is the most widely spoken second language in the world, no matter what country or continent you find yourself in you are guaranteed to find someone who speaks English and can offer you advice or assistance.

I can honestly say that my own travels have contributed to my understanding and knowledge of the world, just as my much as any course I completed or book I've read. These experiences would have been impossible without a working knowledge of English.
